Grizzlies’ Zach Edey practices three-pointers in training camp video

At 6’3″ tall and with one of the most famous college resumes of all time, Zach Edey is rightfully one of the most prolific rookies in the NBA right now.

He was drafted 9th overall and will play an important role for the Grizzlies this season in helping them regain contention in the Western Conference.

In a video posted by Action News 5’s Matt Infield, Edey was seen hitting three-for-three from the corner during Grizzlies training camp:

As Infield’s caption states, skills displayed in a non-competitive environment should be taken with caution. But there are a few notable takeaways from the clip.

Firstly, Edey has been seen shooting from the perimeter in other non-competitive environments, and similar to the recently released video, his mechanics are far better than many would think. The Canadian also has more touch on the ball than he is often given credit for, going 6 for 7 in the video.

It would be monumental for his game and the Grizzlies as a whole if he was able to hit triples as he creates more space and adds another level of versatility to his already potent offense.

Edey may not be ready to take the plunge to make it big just yet, but the video could at least suggest that the staff is willing to allow him to experiment with shorter jumps early on.

The numbers on paper are not in Edey’s favor. In 138 games with the Boilermakers, Edey shot a whopping two 3-pointers and drained one of them for a career-best 50%. Jokes aside, it was a major non-factor for the center.

Time will tell whether Edey is really ready to push the limits. And maybe we’ll find out when Memphis opens the preseason against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday, October 7th.
