Goodlettsville thrift store will be featured in the movie “Great American Family”

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF — A local business is working to make a positive impact in their community. They just received a call that will help their mission tremendously. For sure, a lot more people will see the business.

“This unusual piece here is an old adding machine,” said Mary Smith as she walked through the business she runs, Treasure Hunters Thrift Store in Goodlettsville.

She loves frequent visitors.

“Oh, every week!” smiled a woman at the checkout.

“Every day!” a cashier replied and they both laughed.

“The younger generation of kids, we had an old vintage typewriter and they thought it was the first computer!” said Mary.

What Mary especially loves is the positive contribution this place can make to her city.

“We actually support the Goodlettsville Help Center, a nonprofit organization,” she explained. “We help people with utilities, groceries, gas vouchers, and shelter if needed. 100% of the proceeds from that business go back into the community. The community has been very generous with our donations and we donate daily.”

In a place full of little surprises – have you heard about this surprise?

Mary tells us that a location scout for a movie saw the store. The store got a call from the producer of the film.

“I thought it was a joke!” said Mary.

It was not a joke.

Alexa PenaVega and her husband Carlos PenaVega are the stars of an upcoming film currently under the working title “Love at the Kettle.”

It comes to the Great American Family at Christmas time. In the film, Treasure Hunter’s Thrift Store is decorated to look like a Salvation Army at Christmas time.

For the people in the store, participating in the film is not about their own screen presence. It’s about bringing more attention to what they’re doing.

“I love it,” Mary said. “We’re going to get a lot more people, our thrift store is getting more exposure. We’re going to be able to help more people in our community.”

She is over 80 and almost blind. Woman from Franklin continues to crochet for those in need

“Here’s a great story that proves that everyone has something to give, regardless of age OR personal challenges. Our Austin Pollack introduces us to Ms. Sylvia Mooney. At 80 years old, she is not sitting still. Instead, she is using her skills to create compassion for others… one stitch at a time. Her crochet work goes to nonprofits to help our homeless neighbors. You might be surprised to know that she manages to do all of this while battling a serious health issue. Bravo Sylvia!”
