Glacier Park’s Swiftcurrent area closed from September 16 to mid-May 2026

If you plan to visit the Swiftcurrent area in the Many Glacier Valley in Glacier National Park, Montana, you must do so before September 16 to avoid the closure of the area for road, parking and pedestrian safety improvements and a water system replacement. The closure will remain in place through fall 2024, all of 2025 and until mid-May 2026. During this time, the Many Glacier Valley construction site will be closed to vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians.

“Although this will cause disruption to activities in the Swiftcurrent area, the project will provide much-needed improvements,” said Dave Roemer, superintendent of Glacier National Park. “This project will improve pedestrian safety in the Many Glacier Valley and replace an outdated and failing water system in the Swiftcurrent area.”

All concession facilities in the Many Glacier area will end their regular season and close for the 2024 season after September 15. This includes Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, Glacier Park Boat Company and Swan Mountain Outfitters. The Many Glacier Hotel will close after breakfast on September 16. Drinking water will not be available to the public after the concession facilities close for the season.

Sun Tours, Glacier Guides and Red Buses will continue to operate through September.

The Many Glacier Ranger Station closes early for the season. Wilderness stay permits are issued by park staff from a trailer in the Many Glacier Hotel parking lot. The wilderness stay trailer is open 7 days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through September 26. Permits are not issued after 4 p.m.

The Invasive Aquatic Species Inspection Station (AIS) will be closed for the season and all waters in the Many Glacier Valley will be closed to boating beginning September 16, 2024.

Many Glacier frontcountry campgrounds will close for the season on September 15, 2024.

Access to all trails begins at the Many Glacier Hotel parking lot. Maps and signs indicate detours around the construction site. When vehicle reservations end on September 8, access to certain areas of the park may be temporarily restricted. Many Glacier may become too crowded for visitor safety and resource protection. After September 15, parking is limited to the Many Glacier Hotel parking lot.

In 2025, the Many Glacier Hotel, Swan Mountain Outfitters and Glacier Boat Company will operate as usual. The Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, Many Glacier Campground and trailhead parking lot at the Swiftcurrent end of the valley will be closed for the entire 2025 season.
