A Ghanaian migrant who was detained in a restricted area of Guarulhos International Airport in Brazil has died due to health reasons.

According to Reuters, the 39-year-old died after being treated at the airport’s medical station while being held with a group of illegal travelers who had neither documents nor visas to enter Brazil.

Furthermore, the migrant reportedly died on August 13; the cause of death is still unknown.

The incident has raised concerns about possible human rights violations at the airport.

Due to the high migration flows in the country, the airport lacks the infrastructure to accommodate migrants, which leads to children and young people sleeping on the floor.

Many migrants from India and Vietnam remain stranded at the airport without visas and have no access to food and water.

Further concerns are that airport authorities believe many migrants are exhibiting flu-like symptoms.

As part of its efforts to stop the large influx of migrants, the Brazilian government plans to tighten entry regulations, the report said.

This is intended to prevent migrants from using Brazil as a transit country on their way to the USA and Canada.

Meanwhile, public defense called for a rapid improvement in the living conditions of migrants stranded at the airport while their status is being clarified.
