German racing legend Michael Schumacher makes a rare public appearance at the wedding of daughter Gina-Maria in Spain

Michael Schumacher has reportedly made his first public appearance in several years after traveling to Spain for the wedding of his daughter Gina-Maria.

Since he suffered a traumatic brain injury in a skiing accident in 2013, the 55-year-old German racing driver has hardly been seen in public.

The Formula 1 legend spent six months in a coma, followed by rehabilitation, before being transferred to private care at the Schumacher family home on Lake Geneva.

Schumacher’s wife Corinna and a team of medical professionals look after the seven-time world champion around the clock and protect Michael’s privacy fiercely.

Schumacher is understood to have traveled to Spain on Saturday for Gina-Maria’s wedding to Iain Bethke, which took place at her family’s villa in Mallorca.

German media have confirmed that Michael was “in attendance” to witness the happy event, but no photos of the legendary Ferrari driver were published.

Gina-Maria, 27, is Michael and Corrinna’s only daughter and works as a professional rider.

Her brother Mick, 25, has since followed Michael into motorsport and is currently serving as a reserve driver for Mercedes in Formula 1.

Media claim that Schumacher appeared in front of other wedding guests during the ceremony, but guests were instructed to leave their cellphones at the entrance to protect the racing legend’s privacy.

The appearance comes more than a decade after the life-changing skiing accident in which Schumacher hit his head on a rock.

Since then, there has been speculation in the media about the extent of Schumacher’s injuries. Former racing driver Philippe Streiff told The Telegraph in 2014 that Michael was paralyzed and could not speak.

Gina-Maria’s wedding also comes a year after a German tabloid sparked international outrage after it claimed to have conducted a world-exclusive interview with Schumacher.

The tabloid “Die Aktuelle” published what was supposed to be the “first interview” with Schumacher, but it soon emerged that these answers had been produced using generative artificial intelligence.

Last month, German prosecutors indicted three men arrested this year in an alleged extortion plot against the Schumacher family.

The men are accused of threatening to publish private photos and videos showing Michael’s condition and demanding €15 million (AUD$24 million) from Schumacher’s family.
