Georgia playoff hopes, Jalen Milroe top overreactions in college football

play

We can’t help ourselves. We college football watchers, pros and amateurs alike, are always looking for great conclusions to draw from the results of a single week. The just completed week 5 gave us a lot to analyze.

We take a look back at the five most common overreactions from the weekend, and it should come as no surprise that three of them stemmed from a memorable contest. We’ll start with two that are actually opposite sides of the same coin.

We’ll then take a look at a notable individual performance from this game and then take a quick snapshot of some other conferences whose geography has recently changed.

Georgia’s playoff chances are high

About a quarter and a half into Saturday night’s contest in Tuscaloosa, that’s what it actually looked like. As previously stated, a narrow loss to Alabama isn’t a complete dealbreaker.

Still, the Bulldogs have an uphill climb ahead of them when it comes to winning the SEC Championship. Since there is already a “1” in the loss column, Georgia still has road trips to Texas and Mississippi as well as a home game against Tennessee on the program. To finish in the top two in the final standings, the Bulldogs will likely have to eradicate these and avoid disappointment elsewhere.

However, now, in the year of expansion, there is more than one path to the playoffs. If the Bulldogs survive this gauntlet with just one more loss, a 10-2 record with the strength of their schedule – Uga has the win against Clemson on the bench, remember – would almost certainly be worthy of an at-large spot. The Bulldogs will have to do a few things better to get there, and having to play an extra round would obviously make the road to the title even more difficult, but they can’t be counted out yet.

Jalen Milroe just won the Heisman

Those numbers — 374 yards passing, 117 rushing, four total touchdowns — on this stage with these high stakes are impossible to ignore. If the season were over today, the hardware would almost certainly be his.

Even though there is still more than half of the season to play, Milroe will play the rest of the race from the front. But each week there will be a performance worth considering. There were several others this week. Colorado’s Travis Hunter delivered game-changing plays on both sides of the ball, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty rushed for more than 250 yards for the second time this season and added four touchdowns to his tally, and Ohio State’s sensational freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith could I’m just scratching the surface. Admittedly, the previous week’s performance will be hard to top in Game of the Year, so it’s fair to say that Milroe can expect to make travel plans to New York in December.

A rematch between Alabama and Georgia is inevitable

As fun as that was, there’s still a lot that needs to happen for the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide to meet again, whether it’s for the SEC title or in the playoffs.

Above, we detailed Georgia’s difficult path to the SEC Finals. Alabama now has a significant lead to get there, but also needs to visit Tennessee. Texas is not on the Tide’s regular season roster, but LSU, Oklahoma and Missouri are. All of these teams, and possibly Texas A&M as well, will try to squeeze into a phone booth that can only fit two people. (What do you mean, “What’s a phone booth?”) More variables would have to come together for a second meeting in the playoffs.

Could it happen? Secure. Is it? We are still a long way from being able to say that.

SMU won the realignment lottery

Even the most optimistic SMU fans, including those who essentially helped the school buy its way into the ACC, couldn’t have expected such a resounding debut when they saw the schedule. The Mustangs would host preseason No. 10 and reigning conference champion Florida State for their first contest in their new league.

The Seminoles’ implosion, of course, began as early as Week 0. But even then, the Mustangs didn’t seem ready for prime time in a power conference, as they struggled to get by against a Nevada program that had won just two games a year earlier, and a lackluster loss to Brigham Young did little to change that perception. But a quarterback change revitalized the SMU offense while FSU’s struggles continued, leading to the Mustangs’ blowout 42-16 victory on Saturday.

SMU’s first pass through the ACC, which begins next week in Louisville, will likely be a little more difficult for SMU, but so far the move for the newest team to move up to a so-called power conference is a success.

The winner of the Big 12 realignment will be…

It could still be Utah, especially if and when the Utes can get Cam Rising back healthy. But Arizona’s victory in Salt Lake City in the late hours left the league race wide open.

Right now, only three teams are off to a 2-0 start in conference play. They are undoubtedly the three everyone expected – BYU, Colorado and Texas Tech. The league’s best result so far in the conference is probably Iowa State’s trophy win against Iowa.

There is no denying the vacuum created by the departures of Texas and Oklahoma. But fans across the far-flung league would do well to view the situation as a chance to move forward when there are no clear favorites.
