George Clooney makes Donald Trump an offer in mocking clapback

George Clooney directed a months-old tirade by Donald Trump against him directly at the former president.

In July, Trump fumed that Clooney should “retire from politics and return to television” after the actor wrote an op-ed in the New York Times calling on President Joe Biden to abandon his re-election campaign.

Biden eventually withdrew from the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, upending Trump’s campaign and tactics.

On Tuesday, Clooney spoke with late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel about his editorial, the risks involved in writing it and the role he played in putting pressure on Biden’s decision.

Clooney also responded to former reality TV star Trump’s call to “get out of politics and get back to television,” saying, “You know, if he does that, I will, too.”

“That’s a compromise I would make,” added the Oscar winner, drawing applause from the studio audience.

Elsewhere in the interview, Clooney said US President Joe Biden had done “something truly extraordinary” with his decision to “give up power”.

Clooney had previously described Biden’s decision to drop out of the presidential race as “the most selfless act since George Washington.”

“We should remember the selfless act of someone who did the hardest thing there is,” the former ER star said.

“You know, we’ve seen this all over the world, and when someone says, ‘I think there’s a better way forward,’ they deserve all the credit, and that’s really the truth.”
