A gas leak at Crosby’s gas station in Clifton Springs has sparked a major investigation and cleanup effort by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).
On August 15, DEC officials responded to reports of a strong odor of gasoline near the gas station at 1 Kendall Street, which led to the discovery of fuel contaminating the sewer and storm drains and Sulphur Creek. The leak, which was linked to a failed tank test, prompted the draining of the gasoline tanks and the deployment of environmental response teams.
Residents reported strong gas fumes. Hazardous materials responders went door-to-door to ensure safety. Cleanup efforts include removing contaminated groundwater and soil, while the DEC continues to monitor the situation to protect public health and the environment.
