The calendar may say September, but college football playoffs have already begun.

No. 9 Michigan football hosts No. 3 Texas at the Big House in one of the biggest non-conference games of the 2024 season. Michigan, the defending national champion, looks to extend its position as the best college football team and its home winning streak that dates back to the 2020 season.

The Longhorns are looking for an important away win to secure the title as the nation’s No. 1 team early.

The two teams almost met in the national championship last year, but Michigan faced Washington instead after the Huskies defeated the Longhorns in the semifinals. But the Wolverines didn’t have to wait long for a chance against the Longhorns in a thrilling matchup.

Pre-game notes

Both Michigan and Texas had to reshuffle their rosters in the offseason after reaching the College Football Playoffs in January, with both teams sending double-digit numbers of players to the NFL. Texas has a strong offense led by quarterback Quinn Ewers; Michigan boasts a fierce defense led by cornerback Will Johnson and the “gift of the football gods” – the defensive duo of Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham.

Michigan has won four straight games against top-10 teams since last season, with victories over Penn State, Ohio State, Alabama and Washington en route to the national championship. This is Michigan’s highest-ranked non-conference home game since hosting No. 1 Florida State in 1991, and it’s the first time it’s entered a home game as an underdog since facing Ohio State in 2021.
