Game Thread: TCU Football vs. Houston Cougars

The TCU Horned Frogs (3-2; 1-1) continue Big 12 play with the Houston Cougars (1-4; 0-2) under the Friday Night Lights of Amon G. Carter Stadium.

Houston made a coaching change after its first season in the Big 12, relieving current TCU analyst Dana Holgorsen of his duties and hiring former Tulane coach Willie Fritz to lead the Cougars. It’s been a rough start to Fritz’s tenure, including back-to-back shutout losses to open Big 12 play. Houston picked up a win over Rice to reclaim the Bayou Bucket and gave Oklahoma a tough game with Norman. The UH defense has been strong and is one of the top units nationally in yards allowed per game. Offensively, the Cougars have struggled with turnovers, with QB Donovan Smith throwing five interceptions with just two touchdown passes this season.

TCU has also shown turnover issues, with Josh Hoover’s four interceptions being joined by an accumulation of fumbles. Aside from these picks, Hoover has started the season phenomenally, currently ranks third nationally in total passing yards and has 14 passing TDs. His top target, Jack Bech, was recently named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list as he is on pace to have the best pass-catching season in TCU history with his 35 receptions for 647 yards and six touchdowns. Surrounded by additional weapons Eric McAlister, JP Richardson and Savion Williams, TCU’s passing game is one of the deadliest in the nation.
