Game No. 130: The Nats will place Alex Call on the 10-day IL

The Washington Nationals had found something special in Alex Call, who was a spark for the Nats in many ways. In two separate appearances, Call said he made a mechanical tweak but also a mental adjustment that changed his game. In his 30 games this season, Call batted an impressive .343 with a .950 and delivered some crucial hits, including another memorable walk-off. This time, Call hit with power and consistency at the plate. Unfortunately, his season may be coming to an end as he has a crack in his Plantar fascia in the heel of his left foot. He will go on the 10-day IL.

In the twists and turns of baseball, Dylan Crews is being called up on Monday, and that would have pushed Call into the role of fourth outfielder and DH — and now it looks like Call will be out for a while. The good news, if you’re an optimist, is that many thought this was an Achilles injury, which would have cost Call most of the 2025 season as well.

With the Nats on the verge of calling up Crews, they could have opted to bring him in today as Call’s replacement — but it looks like they’ll cobble together a replacement, possibly with Joey Gallo in right field and Drew Millas as an extra player. That would still leave the Nats with a player to spare on Monday if Crews is activated. Of course, the Nats can expand their roster to 28 players on Sept. 1.

Based on last year’s winning record of 71 games, the Nats need to go 14-19 or better to surpass that record. To surpass FanGraphs’ 66 wins, the Nats need to win 9 more games. There are only 33 games left in the season, and the rest of this season should really help determine the players that could impact the 2025 roster.

The Nats are outsider today, at +150 to win on the moneyline. That means if you bet $100, you win $150. Bet $10.00 and you win $15.00.

Nats manager Dave Martinez had a tie game in overtime and rested their closer Kyle Finnegan. The work in the bullpen was shared by Jacob Barnes, Eduardo Salazar, Robert Garcia and Jose A. Ferrer.

This is what the Nats’ schedule looks like in the future:

  1. Saturday: Jake Irvin vs. Braves
  2. Sunday: DJ Herz vs. Braves
  3. Monday: Mitchell Parker vs. Yankees
  4. Tuesday: Patrick Corbin vs. Yankees
