Freddie Mercury’s London house is for sale after 30 years of preservation: a look inside

A London home formerly owned by Freddie Mercury has come on the market for more than £30 million (about $38 million).

The house, known as Garden Lodge, offered by Knight Frank, was bought by rock star Queen in 1980, according to a press release on Monday.

When he died in 1991, he left the house and all its belongings to his girlfriend Mary Austin.

In 2023, Austin announced that she would give up her role as guardian of his belongings. Later that year, Sotheby’s held the auction “Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own” and sold his belongings, including the piano on which he wrote “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which sold for more than $2 million.

Now it is time to sell your former home.

“This house is the most beautiful memory box because it exudes so much love and warmth in every room,” Austin said, according to the press release. “Now that it’s empty, I feel like I’m back in time when we first came to see it. Since Freddie and I walked through the fabled green door, it has been a place of peace, a true artist’s home, and now it’s time to pass that sense of peace on to the next person.”

Master bedroom, dressing room like a “stage backdrop”

The house was built in 1907 in the neo-Georgian style and Mercury commissioned interior designer Robin Moore Ede to redesign the house to match his unique style.

Knight Frank says the property “offers grand proportions yet a cosy, homely feel”. It includes a two-storey drawing room with large windows where he kept his piano, a cosy dining room painted in his favourite colour and a garden shielded from the busy city streets.

Upstairs, the master suite is accessed through a dressing room with floor-to-ceiling mirrored walls, which Knight Frank describes as “a stage set in itself.”

“With great enthusiasm for entertaining his close circle of friends, Freddie designed the house to be a memorable, inviting place that reflected his vibrant personality and eclectic vision,” the press release said.
