Freddie Freeman is injured as the Dodgers head to the NL West title

The Los Angeles Dodgers erased a 2-0 deficit against the San Diego Padres with an electrifying five-run inning to clinch the National League West title, although Freddie Freeman left the game.

Freeman was on crutches and wearing a walking boot in the Dodgers’ clubhouse as they celebrated their NL West title. He will not travel with the team for the series against the Colorado Rockies and will receive treatment for a sprained ankle over the weekend.

Freeman sustained an injury to his right ankle while attempting an infield single. Freeman avoided a head-on collision with Luis Arraez, but rolled his right ankle after crossing first base.

Freeman immediately went down in pain and slowly limped off the field. He managed to walk into the clubhouse under his own power, but replay of the scene showed the extreme twist in Freeman’s right ankle.

Kiké Hernández, who pinch-hit for Gavin Lux, remained in the game at first base for Freeman. Hernández appears to be the Dodgers’ answer to the final three games of the season, which Freeman will likely miss.

This is the second time Freeman has been injured since the All-Star break. He previously missed time due to a hairline fracture in his right middle finger.

Freeman suffered the injury on August 17 and struggled in the following six games. The Dodgers gave him a three-game break (four days total due to a scheduled rest day) before Freeman returned to the lineup for the series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks in late August.

Freeman hit a home run in his first at-bat.

Effects of Freddie Freeman’s injury

If Freeman were to miss an extended period of time, it would be another obstacle for the Dodgers on their way to winning the World Series.

The team is already without key contributors Tyler Glasnow, Gavin Stone, Clayton Kershaw and Brusdar Graterol, among others.
