Evidence of the house’s sacred past can be found on the upper floor, where high wooden ceilings and windows of the former sanctuary give the space a sacred aura.

These large windows let in plenty of natural light and give the expansive space a heavenly glow.

On one side of the huge space is a loft with a triangular window, while on the other side is another large window above the pipe organ – a focal point of the room, “with beautiful woodwork and exposed brick that enhance the character and history of this beautiful building.”

Stone walls and church-like windows are a highlight in the sleeping area on the upper floor.

This is an ideal property for a buyer looking for a historic conversion with lots of character.

“The craftsmanship is evident in every detail, from the intricate woodwork to the enduring charm of the exposed brick walls. These features not only add character to the building, but are a testament to its rich history,” the listing says.

The organ pipes are still there.

According to the Samuel de Champlain History Center in Champlain, the building served as St. John’s Episcopal Church for about 75 years. It later became a Presbyterian church.

“In December 1927, the Presbyterian Church on the corner of Main and Church Streets in Champlain burned down,” explains David Patrick, secretary of the Samuel de Champlain History Center. “It was rebuilt from the ruins between October 1928 and May 1929 and used as Champlain’s parish hall. At the same time, the Presbyterian congregation decided to purchase the stone church building from the Episcopalians. So the Presbyterians used this stone church from about 1929 until the late 20th century.”

Patrick says that at some point the congregations merged and the building was sold to the public. Conversion of the church into a residential building began around 2007.

Located in the far north of the state, the property is just a few kilometers from the Champlain-St. Bernard de Lacolle border crossing between the USA and Canada and is about an hour from Montreal.

It is located just off Interstate 87, near the Great Chazy River, which flows through the city, and close to Lake Champlain.

The listing states that the converted church building could be used as a residential building, as an investment property or as a combination of both.
