Former Clemson football player dies at age 26

CLEMSON – The Clemson football team announced Saturday that former wide receiver Diondre Overton has died at the age of 26.

On its official X-account, formerly known as Twitter, Clemson Football wrote: “Clemson Football and the entire Clemson family mourn the passing of Clemson alumnus Diondre Overton. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

It is not known how Overton died.

A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Overton committed to Clemson in 2016 after graduating from Walter Hines Page High School. He graduated with a degree in sports communications in 2019.

Overton recorded 52 catches for 777 passing yards and seven touchdowns from 2016 to 2019. He played more than 1,000 snaps at Clemson in his career and appeared in 51 games (five starts).

A two-time national champion and four-time ACC champion, Overton played professionally in the United States Football League, recording 42 catches for 533 yards and five touchdowns for the Philadelphia Stars in 2022 and 2023.

Reaction to the death of Diondre Overton

Several of Overton’s former teammates took to social media on Saturday to remember their friend.

Former Clemson wide receiver Tee Higgins posted on Instagram: “Brother, I miss you already man. … Rest in peace, Big Play.”
