Former Badgers RB Braelon Allen gets 2 touches in NFL debut with Jets

Former Wisconsin running back Braelon Allen made his NFL regular season debut with the New York Jets on Monday night.

Allen, who recorded 16 touches for 93 total rushing and receiving yards in three preseason games, made his presence felt toward the end of the Jets’ 32-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1.

With backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor replacing four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, Allen recorded a nine-yard catch and eight-yard run in stoppage time, but his unique combination of size and speed was evident when he hit the field.

On Allen’s catch, which came on a long second down for New York, the Fond du Lac native raced past several 49ers defenders before putting his head down and pushing for an extra yard at the end of the play. Wisconsin fans witnessed this type of effort throughout his college years.

Allen also picked up a first down for Robert Saleh’s team on a third down deep in 49ers territory. New York wide receiver Allen Lazard finally scored a touchdown to end the drive.

At Wisconsin, Allen rushed for nearly 3,500 yards and 35 touchdowns during his three years as a college prospect. In 11 games last season, he led the Badgers with 984 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns.

The running back was selected 134th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft and is currently the youngest player of the NFL season.

Although Allen entered the season as the Jets’ No. 2 running back behind busy playmaker Breece Hall, his stature and speed make him a valuable player for the Jets going forward. While Hall, who had 21 receptions for 93 total yards and a touchdown on Monday, remains the focal point of the offense alongside Rodgers and wide receiver Garrett Wilson, Allen should get some opportunities throughout the rest of the season.

The Jets will play against the Tennessee Titans in Nashville on September 15.
