Food bank to provide more seniors with fresh produce through new funding

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – The West Texas Food Bank recently received a Blue Impact grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. The West Texas Food Bank said the grant will help fund senior deliveries and fresh food for people in the counties it serves.

The grant recognizes the important role of local organizations in driving positive change, addressing underlying factors that impact health (including socioeconomic challenges), and promoting economic opportunity.

“We are so grateful to have corporate partners like Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. This award will help us provide fresh produce to more seniors. We know the cost of groceries, gas and living expenses cause stress in our senior community, so it is very special to have Blue Cross and Blue Shield help us provide them with all the produce they need. We can’t thank them enough,” said Libby Stephens, CEO of the West Texas Food Bank.

According to a Food Bank press release, since 2011, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas has awarded over $25 million in grants to community organizations across the state, touching the lives of millions of Texas children and families.

“Blue Impact grants are paving the way for a healthier future for children and families across Texas,” said Sheena Payne, Director of Community Affairs for BCBSTX. “We are proud to partner with this year’s recipients and look forward to witnessing the impact their innovative programs have on the communities we serve.”
