Fisher Catholic girls win Be Moore Invitational

CROSS-COUNTRY

Catholic Fisherman: The Irish hosted the Be Moore Invitational and the Irish girls took first place with 23 points ahead of second place Liberty Union (46).

Leading the Irish runners was sophomore Mary Grace Crabtree, who won the two-mile race with a time of 13:59.9. Other Irish runners included Allison Krile (14:15.3) – 3rd place, Maggie Murphy (14:32.1) – 4th place, Abigail Crabtree (14:35.6) – 7th place and Eve Ohwoforwaraye (14:37) – 8th place.

The Irish boys finished second with 41 points, while Vinton County won the competition with 36 points.

Senior Samuel Boyd of Vinton County broke the course record he set in 2023 with a time of 10:25.7.

Leading the Irish runners were juniors Roman Funk and Landen Funk, who finished second and third with times of 10:29.1 and 10:42.7. Other Irish runners included Reece Hagy (11:27.36) in 6th place, freshman Corbin Stewart (12:00.4) in 10th place and Noah Krile (13:01.5) in 22nd place.

Liberty Union: Liberty Union’s cross country teams began their season on August 20 at Fisher Catholic’s Be Moore Invitational two-mile race. The girls team finished in second place and was led by Taylor Jones (fifth, 14:33). She was followed by Rachel Sponseller (sixth, 14:35), Caroline Endsley (12th, 15:51), Elizabeth Conn (18th, 17:34) and Hennali Haines (19th, 17:55).

The boys team finished in fourth place, led by William McCreery (seventh, 11:49), followed by Charlie Sponseller (15th, 12:31), William Gonzalez (25th, 13:31), Levi Hendershot (28th, 14:28), Hunter Maddux (31st, 15:09) and Silas Kohler (32nd, 15:25).

GOLF

Fairfield Christian Academy: The Knights played in a quad tournament against Wellington School, Crooksville and Fisher Catholic at Lancaster Golf Club. FCA won with a team score of 336. Scoring included tournament medalist Josh Witte (sophomore) with an 81, followed by Connor Blair (sophomore) and Harrison Teal (sophomore), who both scored 83 to take second place in the tournament. Rounding out the tournament was Jonnie Sparks (sophomore) (89). FCA’s freshmen also had a strong showing, with Reilly Brant scoring a 99 and Jace Smith scoring a 114 in his first HS tournament.

The team scores went to FCA with 336, The Wellington School with 378, Crooksville with 384 and Fisher Catholic with 453. FCA hopes to extend its winning streak to seven at the MSL Cardinal on September 5 at Lancaster Golf Club.

GIRLS FOOTBALL

Lancaster 6, Jonathan Alder 1: Six players scored for the Gales (1:1) in their non-league win against the Pioneers.

Molly Stedman, Brooke Derringer, Ava VanMeter, Sienna Westbrooks, Piper Cupp and Abby Widener each scored a goal and Westbrooks added an assist. Grace Hampson made four saves, Maddie Boothe three and Kara Mitchell once.

TENNIS

Lancaster 3, Worthington Kilbourne 2: The Gales narrowly defeated Kilbourne in a non-league game.

In No. 1 singles, Kynlee Baer lost 6-3, 6-3, in No. 2 singles, Kaylee Akers won 5-7, 6-2, 7-6, and in No. 3 singles, Kenzie White won 6-1, 6-1. In No. 1 doubles, Brinkley Conklin and Tori Wellington lost 6-1, 7-6, and in No. 2 singles, Vivian Worthington and Kiersin Willet won 6-4, 6-4.
