Firefighters battle fire at butcher shop in Adams County

No one was injured in a fire at a butcher shop in Adams County Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

According to Adams County 911 records, firefighters were called to the scene of a commercial fire at Weaver’s Custom Butcher Shop in the 1400 block of Centennial Road in Mount Pleasant Township, Adams County at approximately 4:06 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.

According to Tom Lawrence, Southeastern Adams’ assistant director of volunteer emergency services, no one was injured in the fire, which broke out during store hours.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered a severe fire on the side of the building and immediately set to work to extinguish the flames.

About 75 percent of the building suffered moderate damage from fire and smoke, Lawrence said, but he was not sure of the true extent of the impact on business.

“They won’t be able to work there for a while,” Lawrence said. “There was pretty extensive damage.”

The cause of the fire appears to have been an accident, Lawrence said.

According to the company’s website, Weaver’s Butcher Shop has been a family-owned business at this location since 1949, offering butcher services as well as a retail store on the premises.

Most of the visible damage to the exterior of the building was on the left side, near what Lawrence described as the butcher shop’s smokehouse.

Firefighters were seen cutting a hole in the roof to vent smoke from the building while fighting the fire.

Lawrence thanked the deployed departments for their support in fighting the fire.

Southeastern Adams Volunteer Emergency Services was assisted by United Hook & Ladder, Irishtown Fire Company, Gettysburg Fire Department, Northeast Adams Fire & EMS, Life Team EMS, Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Alpha Fire Company of Littlestown and Barlow Volunteer Fire Company.
