Fire on American Airlines plane leads to evacuation of the plane at San Francisco airport

According to local fire officials, passengers on an American Airlines plane were evacuated at San Francisco International Airport on Friday afternoon after a fire broke out in the cabin.

Officials said the fire was extinguished and three people suffered minor injuries in the incident. One of the injured was injured while exiting the plane via an inflatable slide. NBC Bay Area reports.

American Airlines Flight 2045 was scheduled to depart San Francisco for Miami at around 1:05 p.m. when cabin crew noticed smoke in the cabin, according to fire officials. The incident occurred as passengers were boarding the plane.

The investigation into the fire is ongoing. Firefighters were discovered by ABC7s A news helicopter places a laptop in a tub of water at the scene of the accident.

American Airlines confirmed in a statement that the fire was caused by an overheated laptop that a passenger had brought on board.

“During boarding American Airlines flight 2045, serving San Francisco (SFO) to Miami (MIA), smoke was reported coming from a customer’s bag,” the airline said in a statement.

“The bag was quickly removed by our crew members and all passengers disembarked from the aircraft. We thank our crew members for their professionalism and apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”

The passengers evacuated from the aircraft were brought back to the terminal. The aircraft involved in the incident was an Airbus A321neo, according to Flight Aware.
