FDA Says Salmonella Egg Recall Could Have Serious Health Effects | US healthcare

More than a month after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initially issued an egg recall after people in nine states became ill with salmonella, the government agency has now stepped up its warnings, saying the eggs in question could cause serious illnesses Could cause damage to health If swallowed, consequences or even death can occur.

The first egg recall occurred in early September for all types of chicken eggs supplied by Milos Poultry Farms LLC in Bonduel, Wisconsin. The FDA took the action after environmental samples of the eggs tested positive for salmonella bacteria and dozens of people in nine states were infected with the outbreak strain, the agency said.

The FDA said the eggs were distributed to foodservice establishments and retailers in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan and illnesses occurred between May 23, 2024 and August 10, 2024. Of the 63 people who fell ill, at least 24 were hospitalized, they added. No deaths had been reported as of Tuesday.

On September 30, the FDA upgraded the recall warning to the most urgent Class I. The FDA says it does so when faced with a situation in which there is a reasonable likelihood that use or exposure to a recalled product will result in serious adverse health consequences or death.

The FDA said it conducted on-site inspections and collected samples at Milos Poultry Farms LLC. Salmonella enteritidis was detected in samples collected from the farm’s packing plant and poultry house.

The recall affects all eggs supplied by Milo’s poultry farms. It covers all expiration dates for eggs of all carton sizes and all egg types marked Milos Poultry Farms, all case sizes of Tony’s Fresh Market brand eggs, and all cases of eggs for retail distribution on all expiration dates.

The FDA has warned that with salmonella infection, illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours of consuming the contaminated food.

Symptoms typically last four to seven days and can include fever, nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps, according to state health officials. The FDA added that children under five, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to experience serious infections.

Milos Poultry Farms LLC has temporarily suspended production and distribution and will conduct appropriate testing and disinfection of farms and processing equipment.
