FDA recalls eggs that ’cause serious health consequences or death’

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled eggs that it said “will cause serious adverse health effects or death.”

The FDA urged people not to eat, sell or serve recalled chicken eggs from Milos Poultry Farms and Tony’s Fresh Market. The FDA issued the first recall on September 6, but has upgraded the recall to Class I, a product that “will cause serious health consequences or death.”

The recall affects all expiration dates of the following eggs:

  • All carton sizes and all egg types marked “Milo’s Poultry Farms”
  • All case sizes of Tony’s Fresh Market brand eggs.

In nine states, 65 people became sick from the same strain of salmonella, 24 people were hospitalized and no deaths were reported.

“This outbreak may be difficult to treat with some commonly recommended antibiotics and may require different antibiotic choices for people who need them,” the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said.

The FDA said symptoms can appear 12 to 72 hours after eating food contaminated with Salmonella and symptoms typically last four to seven days. Symptoms may include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.

The administration urged people to contact their doctor if they think they have developed symptoms of salmonella infection after consuming the eggs.
