Fans tear down goal posts after surprise

Vanderbilt football fans tore down the goal post in the south end zone of FirstBank Stadium on Saturday amid joyful celebrations following a historic Commodores win.

The Commodores beat No. 1 Alabama with a 40-35 win on Saturday, their first win over a No. 1 AP opponent in school history.

The fans stormed onto the pitch before reaching the goal post and tearing it down. It was Vanderbilt’s first win over Alabama since 1984 and the defining moment under coach Clark Lea in his fourth season.

Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia tore through the Alabama defense in the air and on the ground. He was 16 of 20 for 252 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning touchdown with 5:07 to play that gave Vanderbilt a 40-28 lead. Pavia also rushed for 56 yards, using his legs to make plays, such as evading the defense long enough for a 36-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

Running back Sedrick Alexander ran for two touchdowns.
