Fans of classic movies will recognize this San Francisco property. Chapel rental is part of the deal

For sale is a top floor corner apartment in San Francisco with panoramic views of the city and bay in a historic pink building originally built in the 1920s as a convent and hospital.

The price is right, but the apartment is small. The 700-square-foot, one-bedroom, one-bathroom condo is for sale for $899,000.

Still, living at 351 Buena Vista Ave., Unit 802E offers some special perks and cool amenities.

For example, the landmark building – a two-building, 136-unit Park Hill apartment complex – was featured in a scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 psychological thriller “Vertigo,” starring James Stewart and Kim Novack.

Additionally, the building’s remarkable reception area was formerly a chapel. Residents can reserve the beautiful on-site chapel with its stained glass windows for private parties.

The nuns lived in the east building and the west building served as a hospital.

The buildings were designed by renowned architects John Bakewell Jr. and Arthur Brown Jr. of the architectural firm Bakewell and Brown, known for their work on the City of Paris department store, San Francisco City Hall, Temple Emanuel-El and the San Francisco Art Institute. They were converted into condominiums in the late 1980s, according to real estate firm Compass.

According to Compass, the unit is for sale for the first time by the original owner. The home has been thoroughly modernized and refreshed.

“351 Buena Vista was originally both a monastery and a hospital, with a beautiful chapel that residents can reserve for their private events,” Compass agent Gayle Langston told the Sacramento Bee in an email. “I hear the annual Halloween party is wild.”

According to Langston, Hitchcock used an exterior shot of the St. Joseph’s Hospital building where James Stewart’s character Scottie Ferguson is recovering from the effects of a traumatic experience.

“The seller is the original owner and recently had this top floor condo upgraded,” she added. “He insisted that the new owners have a washer and dryer in the condo, along with all new appliances.”

The complex is located across from Buena Vista Park. On one side of the hill is the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood and on the other side is The Castro, where you’ll find restaurants, shopping, and entertainment.

“Parking is ideal, whether in a secure parking lot or on the street. Imagine that in the city,” Langston said.
