Famous Tex-Mex restaurant northeast of Fort Worth closes after 28 years

Miguelito’s Mexican Restaurant, a fixture in the older suburb of Hurst for nearly three decades, is closing and changing ownership on Aug. 31, according to a Facebook post from the restaurant.

“We have had some ups and downs, but we will never forget the support we have received throughout these years,” said the post, signed by owner Gabby Nevares, her family and staff.

When the Nevares family opened Miguelito’s, 209 W. Bedford-Euless Road, in 1996, neighboring Bedford was the largest city in northeast Tarrant County. Hurst, right next door in the corridor between Fort Worth and DFW Airport, was more than twice the size of Southlake or Colleyville.

“Having five grown children, some of whom live across the country, six grandchildren, and another on the way, God’s timing couldn’t have been more perfect after some prayer,” wrote Gabby Nevares.

Nevares did not name the new operator or describe what will fill the gap.

In 1996, she was familiar with the business from her family’s La Playa Maya restaurants in Fort Worth. Her husband, Michael, had worked at the Hurst restaurant when it was a branch of Ojeda’s, a long-standing Tex-Mex restaurant in Dallas.

A 2006 Star-Telegram review called it “the neighborhood go-to for Mexican food” and praised the shrimp cocktail, “vaquero” street tacos and pollo diablo.

Michael (“Miguelito”) died of leukemia in 2004 after a long, emotional farewell reported in the Star-Telegram.
