Family mourns after mother’s burned body found in Highbridge Park

Marcia Recarey’s family are struggling with their loss after her badly burned body was discovered in Highbridge Park last week.

Recarey’s daughters, Leonela and GenNesys Peralta, have erected a memorial in the park with candles, a teddy bear and framed photographs to honor their mother’s life.

“She was not just a cremated remains. She was a person we loved,” said Leonela Recarey.

Marcia Recarey, 58, originally from the Dominican Republic, was known for her vibrant spirit despite numerous challenges in her life.

Recarey suffered from mental health problems, so her family requested inpatient treatment for her. In April, despite her requests, she was released early from a psychiatric hospital and given outpatient treatment that she did not want.

Marcia was then discharged to a residential home to find an independent home, but she left the home and moved between her friends’ homes in search of stability.

Family members said they had been in regular contact with her, but their concerns grew when she broke off contact.

Her daughters told FOX 5 NY that two months before her death, Recarey contacted the NYPD and reported that she felt like she was being followed by two people.

Recarey’s charred remains were found on August 14 after firefighters and police were called to a bush fire in a park near Jumel Place and Edgecombe Avenue.

Recarey’s death has devastated her family and they are seeking justice.

The NYPD is currently investigating the case, but no arrests have been made yet. The family expects to receive toxicology and accelerant test results from the medical examiner next month, which could provide further insight into the circumstances of Marcia’s death.

“She could have been any of your mothers, your granddaughter, your sister. No one deserves to leave this earth like that,” Leonela said.
