Failed Broja sale gives Chelsea another unwanted player

Chelsea’s plan to loan unwanted striker Armando Broja to Ipswich Town has hit a serious obstacle. The deal seemed to be a win-win situation for all parties involved, but it is now in jeopardy due to issues identified during Broja’s medical. These developments have cast doubt on the future of the Albanian international, whose career has been plagued by injuries.

Chelsea and Ipswich Town had initially agreed on a loan deal to send the Albanian to the newly promoted club for the 2024/25 season. However, the deal reportedly came with a catch. If Ipswich retain their Premier League status, they will have to pay $39 million for Broja next summer. For the Blues, this move was not only a way to get rid of a surplus player, but also a strategic move to bolster their financial position. Since Broja is a homegrown player, any transfer fee Chelsea receives is pure profit; it helps Chelsea comply with profit and sustainability rules.

For Ipswich, the deal represented a significant boost to their attacking options, with the 22-year-old bringing Premier League experience and potential. The player himself would benefit from regular first-team action; a chance to rebuild his career after a series of setbacks at Stamford Bridge.

Medical problems put a stop to the plan

Unfortunately, the seemingly perfect arrangement has fallen apart. According to reports from The Guardian and other sources, Broja’s medical has revealed signs of an Achilles tendon injury, raising doubts about his fitness. These medical issues, rather than paperwork or personal conditions, are reportedly the main reason the deal is now “in danger of falling apart.”

Although the deal is not completely off the table, Ipswich Town are exploring alternative options. This development is a major blow not only for Broja, who was yearning for a fresh start, but also for Chelsea, who are looking to trim down their squad before the transfer window closes.

A series of unfortunate injuries have marked Broja’s career in west London. The 22-year-old striker missed much of last season with a knee injury and struggled to make an impact during a loan spell at Fulham in the second half of the season. These setbacks have severely limited his options at Stamford Bridge. Under the new management of Enzo Maresca, Broja has been informed that he is not in Chelsea’s plans.

The situation has put Chelsea in a difficult position. The club are keen to sell Broja and Everton have reportedly shown interest. However, the medical issues that have jeopardised his move to Ipswich could also deter other potential suitors.

Chelsea consider Everton and other potential destinations for Broja

Everton, who have long admired Broja, could be a potential destination should the Ipswich deal fall through completely. The Toffees are reportedly monitoring the situation closely, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding their striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Calvert-Lewin is entering the final year of his contract and is attracting interest from clubs such as Chelsea and Newcastle. Everton could consider alternatives such as Broja if he leaves.

Everton could reportedly sign Broja even if Calvert-Lewin stays. The move is more than likely if they offload strikers such as Neal Maupay or Beto, both of whom are considering an exit. However, the medical issues that have delayed the move to Ipswich could also be a warning sign for Everton.
