FAA allocates 6 million to modernize airport runways and other infrastructure

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) continues its efforts to provide funding for airport infrastructure projects and has approved $566.4 million for terminal expansion, taxiway and runway rehabilitation, and other major improvements.

The latest round of FAA grants, announced on August 13, includes 299 grants for airport projects in 47 states.

Funding for the grants comes from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which provides a total of $25 billion over five years for improvements to airports and air traffic control facilities.

The five best grants

The largest grant in the new round is $49.6 million for the Kailua/Kona Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport in Keahole, Hawaii. The funds will be used to finance runway rehabilitation work.

According to the FAA, the second-largest contract is worth $45.4 million to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport for structural, earthquake-resistant and building engineering improvements in an airport concourse.

Also on the list is Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, which will receive $43.3 million for several projects, including building a de-icing platform and taxiway and remodeling a runway.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina received $35.5 million to relocate a runway.

Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky received $34.6 million for a 30,000-square-foot expansion of its existing terminal.

The grants come from IIJA’s Airport Infrastructure Grant program, which provides $2.9 billion annually over five years.

The FAA says it has so far provided about $9 billion to airports from this program. Just four days earlier, the FAA awarded $636.1 million in non-IIJA funds for other airport improvement projects.
