Epic Games CEO says company is now “financially sound”

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney announced yesterday during a presentation at Unreal Fest 2024 that the company is now “financially sound.”

Sweeney recalled the company’s situation in 2023, noting that it “needed to get its finances in order,” which led to the layoffs of around 830 employees last September.

“We’ve spent the last year rebuilding and executing really solidly on all fronts,” he said. “I am now pleased to report that the company is financially sound and that Fortnite and the Epic Games Store have achieved new records for concurrency and success.”

Sweeney also announced that Fortnite reached a new high of 110 million monthly active users over the holidays.

Steve Allison, general manager of the Epic Games Store, highlighted that the storefront reached 70 million monthly active users last month.

Earlier this week, Epic filed another lawsuit against Google and Samsung. It claimed that Samsung’s auto-blocking feature “solidifies the Google Play Store as the only viable way to load apps onto Samsung devices and prevents any other store from competing on a level playing field.”

The company won an antitrust case against Google last December. It was claimed that the current partnership between Google and Samsung undermined the jury’s verdict in the case.
