Dozens flock to SunWest Park for the first Scallop Fest

PASCO COUNTY, Fla. – Dozens of people flocked to SunWest Park in Hudson to round out the final weekend of the inaugural Pasco County Scallop Fest.

“The beach sand is whiter than Clearwater, whiter than Destin or Pensacola. We have volleyball net facilities here, professional volleyball nets, everything is set up,” said County Commissioner Jack Mariano.

From water sports to food trucks to live music, Mariano said Scallop Fest was a huge success and, thanks to sponsors, was free for everyone.

It also gave some small businesses like Dre’s Island Food Services a chance to shine.

“It’s great. First of all, it gives me the opportunity to show what I can do because for me it’s about the experience. It’s not just about food. My slogan is: We offer more than just food. It’s about the experience,” said Keary Simms.

Scallops are an important part of Simms’ culture. He worked with the county’s economic development council, which helped him serve scallops in a variety of ways.

“I made scallops in coconut curry which was a hit and I also made a guava glazed scallop!” Simms added.

Meanwhile, scallop fishing is still suspended in Pasco County after the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission suspended scallop fishing last month due to health-threatening bacteria levels.

“Last week we had a much better test. They only found a small spot south of the Anclote… They will measure again and test everything. Hopefully they can open it next week,” Mariano explained.

Mariano said he hopes the scallop season will be extended once it gets the green light, and he looks forward to next year’s scallop festival.

Proceeds benefit Steps to Recovery, Inc., Pasco County Parks; Recreation and Natural Resources Summer Camps, and West Pasco Sertoma.

Storm surge from Tropical Storm Debby washed away nearly 100 sea turtle nests on Anna Maria Island. ABC Action News reporter Jessica De Leon spoke with the Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch team that is examining the nests to determine if they are still viable.
