“According to your preamble “No team has ever qualified from the league after losing their first two games,” says Richard Hirst. “But can that also apply to the new, larger cup, with a completely different league phase? Are we in a Schrödinger League situation where the league exists and does not exist at the same time?”

We’re not in a Schrödinger League situation so much as we are in a situation where cracking hacks and making simple gags is boring.

Preview between Dortmund and Celtic

We’re playing against a team that challenges the top level of top-flight football. But for us, I’ve always said this, whether at home or away in this competition, it makes us a really difficult team to play against, with or without the ball. We want to be able to do that.

“Hello Rob, from a finally sunny Indianapolisafter four days of Helene-inspired gloom and rain!” writes Joe Pearson. “Thanks to Paramount+’s huge buffet, I have a choice between my matches. Which is the jewel of the bunch? I’m tempted by Leverkusen-Milan, but I could also just go for the Whiparound show. Or there are baseball playoffs. “The Dilemmas of a Retired American.”

If I wasn’t working, I would probably watch Pine Barrens for the 497th time Arsenal against PSG, but also the Leverkusen and Dortmund games are attractive.

56th minute: Stuttgart – Sparta Prague 1:1

“I recommend you watch Kairinen’s goal for Sparta Prague,” writes Kári Tulinius. “It’s the type of free kick that’s not fashionable these days. The ball flew like it was on a VHS tape called 101 Great Free Kicks, hit the top of the post and then flew in, with the goalkeeper just an inch away from hitting it in his hand.”

preamble

Good evening everyone. Life moves pretty quickly and tomorrow evening we will be a quarter of the way through the new league phase of the Champions League. A quarter! Two eighths! Before you know it, it will be May 31, 2025 and Carlo Ancelotti will be eating another celebratory cigar.

Carlo’s men are not in action tonight, but there are nine games taking place, involving eight former winners of the competition. The most eye-catching contest is between two teams who have never been European champions: Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, who meet at the Emirates Stadium. There is a separate live blog for this game here.

There are two meetings between former champions: Borussia Dortmund (1997) against Celtic (1967) and Internazionale (1964, 1965, 2010) at home against Red Star Belgrade (1991).

Manchester City and Barcelona have winnable games, while AC Milan face a difficult trip to Leverkusen. They were soundly beaten by Liverpool two weeks ago and their coach Paulo Fonseca is aware that no team has qualified for the league after defeats in their first two games.

These are the fixtures, all kick-offs at 8pm (BST) unless otherwise stated.

  • Salzburg – Brest 0:1 (5:45 p.m.)

  • Stuttgart – Sparta Prague 1:1 (5.45 p.m.)

  • Arsenal vs Paris Saint Germain

  • Barcelona against Young Boys

  • Dortmund vs Celtic

  • Inter vs Red Star

  • Leverkusen versus Milan

  • PSV Eindhoven vs Sporting CP

  • Slovan Bratislava vs Manchester City
