DLB golf girls tee off on their home course outside of the season

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) – The fall sports season is upon us. Girls golf is the first sport to begin competition. Both Class A and Class B begin Friday.

Des Lacs-Burlington begins its season at home with the DLB Varsity Golf Meet at Wildwood Country Club.

Sophomore Laila Christianson, who placed fourth in the Class B state tournament last year, told Your News Leader what she’s looking forward to from the team’s perspective this season.

“I think there will be a big improvement for everyone, and I’m just excited to see how much better everyone will be at the end of the year,” Christianson said.

The Lakers’ projected No. 2 golfer is junior Ella Pearson, who shared her thoughts on the team ahead of their first tournament.

“I think we’re all really excited. We have a pretty young team and I think our chemistry is really good this year. We’re all about the same age and we’ve been talking and playing golf together over the summer. I’m really excited for all of us and for the younger girls to play their first tournament tomorrow. I’m excited,” Pearson said.

The girls’ golf season is the shortest on the fall calendar, as the state tournament doesn’t begin until late September. However, teams play several tournaments before the postseason.

Head coach Marie Burckhard explained how she is approaching the first tournament, knowing that there is still a long way to go until the state championship.

“At this point it’s a benchmark. It’s the first meeting, we know there will be some nerves involved, but we also know it’s a good way to measure where we are and have a benchmark for the end of the season and where we want to be then,” said Burckhard.

The Lakers tee off at 10 a.m. in Wildwood on Friday.
