Disturbing video shows off-duty Atlanta police officer Aubree Horton panicking outside a neighbor’s home before being fatally shot: “Kill me!”

Shocking footage released Monday shows Aubree Horton, an off-duty Atlanta police officer, completely panicked and possibly experiencing “a mental health attack” shortly before he was fatally shot while allegedly trying to break into a neighbor’s home to break in.

Horton is seen running shirtless and screaming down a street in Winston, Georgia, around 5:08 a.m. on Oct. 4, according to video released by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The 39-year-old police officer, who lived in the area, can be heard shouting “Jesus save us” and “Help me” before reaching a neighbor’s front door in the St. Andrews Country Club area.

Ring’s doorbell footage then shows the off-duty officer running full speed to his neighbor’s front door, still screaming for help. He appears to be trying to open the door using the handle, but can’t get in.

Horton then hits the door with his shoulder.

The homeowner appears to shout something to Horton from inside the house, prompting him to yell “No, kill me” before lunging in the door again.

He appears exhausted, sits down on the porch steps, covers his face with his hands and takes a deep breath.

“Who are you?!” The neighbor can be heard screaming from inside the house before calling for his wife.

After a brief moment of silence, Horton randomly calls out “I love you” before letting out a bloodcurdling scream and lying down on the porch.

The lights on the house’s porch come on and the owner is heard screaming his wife’s name again.

Horton then jumps up and approaches the door before the video ends.

Douglas County Sheriff Tim Pounds said in a statement Monday that Horton then violently burst into the home as the door was cracked open and threw the homeowner to the ground.

“Fearing for his life and in defense of his home, the homeowner fired a single round from his firearm, fatally wounding Horton inside his home,” Pounds said.

Pounds said the homeowner was in bed when he woke up to the sound of screaming outside.

His wife had left for work shortly before Horton arrived at the residence.

The homeowner, armed, cracked the door open after making several attempts to communicate with the off-duty officer and was concerned for his wife’s safety.

During the incident, the homeowner’s wife received multiple notifications from her Ring doorbell camera and called 911 after realizing what was going on.

The sheriff’s office said it released redacted video footage of the frightening incident to provide the public with transparency about the incident. Parts with sensitive content, such as the sound of the fatal shot that killed Horton, were not included.

“We want to emphasize that this was a tragic situation in which the homeowner was defending his life and his home,” Pounds said.

“At this point, we are confident that no charges will be filed against the homeowner.”

The sheriff’s office said the two did not know each other and there had been no domestic disturbance involving Horton before the incident.

Pounds also said the department wanted to address numerous false rumors circulating online that the home belonged to Capt. Jon Mauney, head of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division.

“These rumors are categorically false,” Pounds wrote in his statement.

“Furthermore, the allegation that Officer Horton was involved in a domestic disturbance or that a family member of his sought refuge in the home is untrue. Horton was completely unknown to the homeowner.”

Horton joined the Atlanta Police Department in November 2015 and was most recently assigned to the APD’s fugitive unit.

The Sheriff’s Office is working with the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office to prepare a full report on the incident.

A toxicology report is still pending, but “it could take several months to complete.”

“We believe that Horton may have been having a mental health episode or was under the influence of narcotics at the time of the incident,” Pounds added.

The department announced on Facebook that he was named “Investigator of the Year” at the ADP Crime Is Toast Awards breakfast on Sept. 24.

Horton received the award in connection with a case involving missing 21-year-old man Leondre Flynt, whose remains were discovered in July.
