While millions of Americans drink coffee every day, Sunday is a special day to celebrate a cup of joe.

Every September 29th is considered National Coffee Day in the United States. The popular brew is also celebrated worldwide on October 1st as International Coffee Day. To mark National Coffee Day and make it easier for coffee lovers to celebrate, coffee shops, fast food restaurants, convenience stores and other places known for their coffee are offering giveaways, discounts or special offers.

It’s no secret that coffee is a popular drink. According to the National Coffee Association, American adults consume more than 400 million cups of coffee per day.

According to the National Coffee Association’s 2024 Trend Report, Americans who consume coffee drink an average of 2.5 cups of coffee per day.

Other key takeaways from the National Coffee Association:

  • While 61% of Americans prefer traditional coffee, 56% choose specialty coffees such as latte macchiato, espresso and cappuccino.
  • 24% of coffee cups last day were served cold, 60% more than in winter 2023.
  • It’s no surprise that 84% of Americans drink their coffee with breakfast in the morning. A whopping 76% of Americans say coffee wakes them up and gets them going.

According to Nick Becharas, CEO of Highland Park-Becharas Brothers Coffee Co., getting these deals now is a good idea as coffee prices are rising quickly.

“It’s a perfect storm with so many factors,” Becharas said. “There is a drought in Brazil, there is no rain. We just came out of a drought in Vietnam and inventory levels in U.S. warehouses are at historic lows.”

Becharas added that there is a “potential strike with the International Dockers Union” on October 1st.

When it comes to coffee, Detroit isn’t a hotspot for this brew, according to personal finance website WalletHub’s 2024 list of the 100 Best Coffee Cities. In fact, Detroit is near the bottom at No. 96 on the list. Coming in at number 100 is Laredo, Texas.

Detroit also spends the least money on coffee, ranking 100th on the list. At the top of the list is Fremont, California, with the highest average annual spending on coffee – nearly four times higher than Detroit.
