The summer blues can be a little daunting this time of year as we head into the “darker”/cooler months. When Rosh Hashanah begins: evening of Wednesday, October 2, 2024 – Friday, October 4, 2024

Each year it is helpful to share information about Rosh Hashanah in Detroit and beyond so that the Jewish community in Detroit and Metro Detroit feels at peace.

The significance of the festival lies in the Jewish New Year, which falls at the beginning of the month of Tishri. Tishrei is the seventh month of the Jewish year. The Hebrew month of Nisan (a month of miracles and redemption) occurs in the spring and ushers in this current season of exhilaration and deep introspection, encouraging people to reflect on their life path.

In Judaism Yom Kippur is also just around the corner as it is the tenth day of the new year (Friday, October 11, 2024) Begins at sunset following Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah is essentially the beginning of The High holidays and days of penance. This is a time for introspection and observation, which includes women and girls lighting candles in the evening.
