Detroit Tigers vs. Chicago White Sox: Score, Channel, Weather, Updates

The final day of the MLB regular season has arrived.

The Detroit Tigers have already secured a playoff spot for Game 162 against the Chicago White Sox, but still have to fight for the seeding. The Tigers are one game ahead of the Kansas City Royals and are the fifth seed in the American League playoffs.

The Tigers start right-hander Kenta Maeda (who has been in the bullpen all summer) against the White Sox at 3:10 p.m., while the Royals start at 3:20 p.m. against the Atlanta Braves. The Braves haven’t secured a playoff spot, but they do have the second wild card spot in the National League.

Here’s a quick breakdown of today’s possible outcomes that impact the Tigers’ seeding. They will play either Baltimore or Houston in Game 1 on Tuesday.

The Tigers can clinch the second wild-card spot with a win or loss against Kansas City and would secure a best-of-three road series against the Baltimore Orioles. This would pit two of the youngest playoff squads against each other, with the winner facing the top-seeded New York Yankees in the best-of-five ALDS.

If the Tigers lose and the Royals beat the Braves, the Tigers drop to the final AL wild card spot, where they would face the Houston Astros in the first round. That would mean facing the old team of Tigers manager AJ Hinch and Justin Verlander, with the winner facing the No. 2 seed Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS.

Everything points to Houston for the Tigers. The Royals held the Braves at bay while the White Sox added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Casey Mize gave up a leadoff single and a walk before being pulled for Keider Montero, who began his appearance with a walk to load the bases. Bryan Ramos hit a two-in pick with a single to right field, followed by an error by Matt Vierling at third base and a single by Jacob Amaya to left to score third and fourth runs.

The Tigers finally have some life. Spencer Torkelson, Trey Sweeney and Parker Meadows loaded the bases with three walks from Jonathan Cannon and set up Carpenter with the bases juiced and two outs. Carpenter hit a fastball at the top of the zone and sent it over the old wall into the deepest part of right-center field to cut the White Sox lead to 1 over the final four innings.

The Royals lead the Braves 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

As of now, the Wild Card Tigers would face the Astros, but the Braves continue to struggle. Ramón Laureano cut the Royals’ lead to two with an RBI single in the bottom of the 4th inning, but poor baserunning prevented Atlanta from scoring any more runs. In Detroit, the Tigers are still stuck at three hits and zero runs.

Casey Mize replaced Kenta Maeda with two outs to start the fifth inning. Maeda gave up five runs on five hits in 4⅔ innings.

The Royals extended the lead to three runs with a solo shot by Hunter Renfroe in the top of the fourth inning. He negated a change to center by Charlie Morton while Kenta Maeda took the mound for his fifth inning for the Tigers in Detroit. The Tigers are still down 0-5 with five hits from the White Sox.

An old friend of the Tigers has brought the Braves on board. Former Tigers third baseman Gio Urshela, who was among the veterans cut at the trade deadline, hit a solo home run off Alec Marsh, cutting Kansas City’s lead to two in the fourth inning. Up in Detroit, the Tigers’ hitters remain quiet.

Tigers starter Kenta Maeda allowed five runs on five hits in three innings. Chicago’s Lenyn Sosa hit a two-out, three-run home run to 405 feet to left-center field in the third inning. As of now, the Tigers would travel to Houston to take on the Astros.

Maeda gave up two runs in the second inning. Meanwhile, in Atlanta, the Royals hit a three-run home run by Michael Massey off Charlie Morton in the first inning.

The weather only started to change a half-hour before first pitch of the Tigers’ regular-season finale. The heavy fog and rain from the morning has passed and grounds staff have removed the tarpaulin from the field so play should begin promptly at 3:10 p.m. The fans are constantly flocking and it should be another well attended game.

The Tigers clinched a playoff spot with an emotionally charged win over the White Sox on Friday night and celebrated all night before losing the sleepy second game on Saturday. Detroit is trying to finish the season with its seventh straight series win and get back on the winning side of the postseason. In the first base dugout, the White Sox have already posted the worst record in modern MLB history.

The Wild Card Series begins Tuesday, meaning the Tigers travel to either Baltimore or Houston on Monday. The Tigers must win two of three road games to advance to the ALDS and host a home playoff game. The wildcard series takes place on three consecutive days from Tuesday to Thursday. The schedule will be announced when the full playoff round is determined. The Braves and New York Mets play a doubleheader on Monday to determine the final NL wild card seeds.

The Tigers must finalize a 26-man postseason roster before Tuesday. The majority of the roster is pretty much set, but the Tigers will have to weigh how many position players vs. pitchers to add and which fringe players like Jace Jung or Justin Henry-Malloy will be cut.
