As part of the city’s ongoing efforts to make Detroit a “HEARTSafe Community,” the department is working with the Detroit Department of Transportation and several other city departments to train employees and ensure that city buildings and buses are equipped with automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

According to the American Heart Association, immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use of an AED can double or triple a person’s chances of survival from an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

DDOT, under the leadership of Interim Director G. Michael Staley, was one of the first city departments to require its transportation equipment operators (TEOs) to be trained in hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

“Training our TEOs in CPR and defibrillator use can literally mean the difference between life and death,” Staley said in a statement. “The response from our employees is very encouraging. Safety is DDOT’s top priority and this training underscores that commitment.”

Last year, the city joined the Pulse Point AED app, which shows a directory of publicly available AEDs in the area. To take a CPR training class or learn more about using an AED, visit the City of Detroit website or call 313-596-2959 to request a training in your neighborhood.
