In a 28-10 loss that brought back memories of last season’s misery, head coach Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes were overwhelmed by the physically stronger Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday night.
Quarterback Shedeur Sanders took five sacks and was pressured frequently as Nebraska’s talented defensive linemen easily tore through Colorado’s offensive line. However, the Buffs put in some good performances defensively, including holding Nebraska scoreless in the second half.
Colorado fell to 1-1 and has another rivalry game against the Colorado State Rams scheduled for next Saturday.
Here are some of the statements from Coach Prime and Shedeur Sanders following Colorado’s poor performance at Memorial Stadium:
Positive
Deion Sanders: “The positive thing is how we fought in the second half. We didn’t give up, we didn’t give up at all.” #CUBuffs

Thoughts on the Offensive Line
Coach Prime on the offensive line.
“I think they did a good job in the first game, but not this game. We didn’t run the ball like we wanted to. We have to find a way to have some kind of running game.”

Update on Shedeur Sanders
Deion Sanders says Shedeur Sanders got a little “bumped” on a targeting call late in the game, so Colorado took him out of the game. No. 2 went back to the locker room late in the game.

Frustrations
Deion Sanders on the most frustrating aspect of today’s game: “Knowing we have a tremendous offense. We should be able to move the ball against anyone.” #CUBuffs

Stay with offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur
Deion Sanders: “Pat (Shurmur) did a wonderful job. I won’t go into that.”
— Jake Shapiro (@Shapalicious) 8 September 2024
No running game
Coach Prime said the reason the running backs only managed four projected runs in the first half was because of the flow of the game and he supports Pat Shurmur.

Too many penalties
Coach Prime on the penalties tonight.
“We can’t do anything stupid, we have to stop this nonsense.”

Shedeur praises Nebraska’s defense
Shedeur Sanders on what Nebraska did to stop the Buffs offense.
“They were just ready to play. They followed their game plan and were successful.”
— Jake Schwanitz (@JakeDNVR) 8 September 2024
“Beginner’s mistake”
Shedeur called his pick-six “a rookie mistake.”
“That can’t happen.”

Shedeur talks about the weak running game
I asked Shedeur about CU’s running game: “If you’re able to run the ball consistently, it opens up opportunities for passing, but you have to understand what your team is good at.”
“Why should we keep the ball rolling when we get into a situation where we really need it and we don’t get it?”
