David Stearns and Steve Cohen are proud of the 2024 Mets for “never giving up” during the rollercoaster season

The 2024 Mets season has been an absolute roller coaster ride.

It’s only fitting that their decisive playoff win on Monday afternoon was exactly that, as they pulled out a dramatic come-from-behind victory over the trailing Braves Francisco LindorIn the ninth round there is the starting signal for the home run.

“It was one of the craziest games I’ve ever taken part in” Carlos Mendoza said. “Just the significance of coming back in the eighth, then losing the lead and coming back in the ninth was incredible, it’s like you could write a book.”

This season’s story would definitely make a damn good book too.

Even when he was president of baseball operations his first year David Stearns Although he told everyone during spring training that this team was made to be a contender, outside perception remained low.

The decline fell even further when they lost their first five games of the season and were quickly considered likely sellers again before the deadline after falling just 11 games under .500 during a brutal skid in May.

But the guys in the locker room kept their heads down and answered the bell time after time, and after everything turned around in the second half, they were finally able to celebrate on Monday.

“They never gave up and never gave up,” owner Steve Cohen said. “I have never seen a more resilient group. They believed in themselves when many others didn’t, they just kept going and proved it. You have to admire that, it just shows you that anything is possible.”

“I’m just so happy for everyone here and I’m happy for the Mets fans,” Stearns added. “We are a franchise that hasn’t had enough of these moments. We need to have more of these moments and this is a really important step in that direction.”

And while Monday night’s celebration was undoubtedly deserved, the Mets know there’s still another chapter to be written in this book, starting Tuesday night against the NL Central champion Milwaukee Brewers.

“We know we still have more work to do. I don’t think anyone here is happy,” Stearns said.

“I just want to keep going,” Cohen added. “This team can do it. You believe in yourself and anything is possible. Nobody believed in what we did around the trade deadline, but they pushed through it and continued to believe in themselves. This is where we are now, so you want to believe.”
