The BYU quarterback went undrafted after graduating from college in 2017. He signed with Green Bay when McCarthy was the Packers’ head coach and made a splash in training camp.

“We thought he was a damn good quarterback,” McCarthy said.

The hope was that the Packers could release Hill in the final cutdown and bring him back to the practice squad to develop him as a quarterback. New Orleans, then coached by Sean Payton, had other ideas.

He was picked up immediately.

“I think he was the best runner in the league, the entire NFL, last season,” McCarthy said of Hill. “He’s played extremely well this year.”

“Honestly, we thought we were going to try to push him to the practice squad. That lasted about two minutes.”

Hill is now entering his eighth season with the Saints. He has thrown for over 2,300 yards, rushed for over 2,100 yards and caught for over 750 yards in his career.

“His career, what he accomplished, was amazing to watch from afar,” McCarthy said. “I think as with anything, the more value you can create, the longer your job security is. He’s mastered that.”

“He’s a weapon. He can do many things.”
