Courtney Cox has not signed a contract for “Scream 7” … yet

Courtney Cox is the only actress to have appeared in every Scream film since 1996. But despite reports that Cox signed on for Scream 7 in March, she isn’t set on reprising her role as Gale Weathers for the next sequel. And she doesn’t seem to be in a rush, either.

“I haven’t officially signed yet,” Cox told Variety. “No, but there will be a Scream 7.” Cox also mentioned that she doesn’t have a time frame for her decision, but she will be kept updated on the script. “They’re constantly rewriting,” Cox said. “It’s not like I don’t know what’s going on.”

Cox also expressed her excitement for director Kevin Williamson – the series’ original screenwriter – who has been signed to bring Scream 7 to the screen. “You can’t make a better choice,” Cox noted. “It’s going to be fun.”

So far, only Neve Campbell has agreed to return for Scream 7. She declined to appear as Sydney Prescott in Scream 6 because of a salary dispute. But if it were up to Cox, she would like to see her ex-husband David Arquette return to the role of Dewey Riley, even though he died on screen in the fifth film.

“I understand the reasons why they (killed Dewey), but wow! There’s a real missing character,” Cox said. “Dewey is so beloved by the Scream fans. They need to figure it out.”

The original version of Scream 7 was set to star Melissa Barerra and Jenna Ortega as the Carpenter sisters Sam and Tara. However, Barerra was fired from the film over her social media comments about the war in Gaza, while Ortega pulled out of the sequel, announcing her schedule for season 2 on Wednesday. Following those departures, Campbell and Williamson were asked if they would return for the next film.

There is currently no release date for Scream 7.
