Community shop attracts 200 visitors in the first six months

More than 200 people have signed up for a community shop in Wolverhampton in the first six months.

The Central Community Shop and a social enterprise café were set up in the Queen’s Building in the city centre.

Residents have paid an annual membership fee of £3 to sign up to the shop, which offers groceries at affordable prices.

The store received donations of fresh produce grown in the allotment gardens of participants in a Wolves Foundation project.

The Premier League club’s official charity, Good Shepherd charity, and the city council have joined forces to open the store, which is the flagship of a network in the city.

The project is supported by other organisations, including Wolves at Work, a service that helps people find work and progress in their careers. Users of the service are given vouchers for the shop, not for larger supermarkets.

All proceeds from the cafe go toward Good Shepherd’s free food and relief services, as well as other charitable activities.

The café in the building can operate thanks to funding from the charity SJOG Hospitaller Services.

The Wolves Foundation’s support for Queen’s is part of its ‘Supporting Our Pack’ campaign – providing support to help people cope with “the cost of living and other challenges that impact their daily lives”.

The fresh produce was grown by participants in the charity’s Head 4 Health project for adults looking to improve their wellbeing.
