Colts QB out with hip against Steelers

play

INDIANAPOLIS – Colts starting quarterback Anthony Richardson has been ruled out of the game against the Steelers due to a hip injury suffered in the first quarter.

Richardson sat out two games after taking a hard hit from Pittsburgh at the end of a first-down run in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Steelers.

Richardson returned to the game for one play, carried the ball again, attempted to slide and took a hit to the torso from Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Richardson remained on his side again, stood up and walked away under his own power while holding onto his right side, then left the field again.

The second time, the coaches immediately took Richardson to the locker room. Considered questionable as to whether he would return with a hip injury, he returned to the sideline before the next drive with his helmet on and jogged a bit, but substitute Joe Flacco remained in the game.

The two hits the Steelers gave Richardson were the types of hits the quarterback had to avoid this season after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury at the end of a run against the Titans.

Richardson’s first run was a taste of the explosiveness the quarterback brings to the offense.

Richardson kept the ball after faking a handoff to running back Jonathan Taylor and chose not to slip as he took a hit backwards from DeShon Elliott, forcing a fumble. Colts center Tanor Bortolini recovered the fumble in a scrum, while Richardson remained on his back nearby, unable to leave the field.

After a brief examination by trainers, Richardson left the field and ran to the sideline under his own power, then returned to the field after backup quarterback Joe Flacco took two snaps in his place.

Richardson held the ball to the left side on the handoff and tried to slide, but Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick hit it up anyway and Richardson couldn’t leave the turf.

This time the Colts coaches didn’t wait; Richardson went straight to the locker room.

Flacco completed both pass attempts for 14 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown to Josh Downs, making the Colts’ score 14-0.
