Coldplay is coming to Camp Randall Stadium. How to get tickets

Camp Randall Stadium will host its first concert since 1997 next year, with a band that hasn’t performed in Wisconsin since 2009.

Coldplay is coming to the Wisconsin Badgers football stadium on July 19 as part of their “Music of the Spheres World Tour,” the Chris Martin-led British band officially announced on its website Tuesday.

The tour stop wasn’t a closely guarded secret. On Saturday, during the Badgers’ game against Purdue, it was announced that details of the first concert at the stadium in nearly 30 years would be announced on Tuesday. But during the game, the DJs seemed to give a hint as they played Coldplay songs one after another after the announcement.

Also: Coldplay previously made a tour announcement on social media that used abbreviations for various states, including Wisconsin — and the band celebrated the world premiere of its latest album, “Moon Music,” in Wisconsin last week, at the Moon Saloon in town Moon, a few hours drive north of the stadium.

On Sunday evening, Badgers and Madison-based concert promoter FPC Live shared a video on its social media channels that showed the band’s name and some of the band’s logos on video screens in the empty stadium.

Last month, the stadium-dominating tour – named after Coldplay’s 2021 album – was declared the best-selling rock tour of all time. According to Billboard, it has grossed $945.7 million from 8.8 million tickets so far since its March 2022 launch.

But there has been no Coldplay tour in Wisconsin since July 25, 2009, when the band played the Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, where they played their 2008 signature track “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends.” And the band has never played Madison before: the only places Coldplay has played in Wisconsin are Alpine and the Rave and Bradley Center in Milwaukee.

Featuring original members Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion, Coldplay has plenty of music for Wisconsin fans next year. Previous Music of the Spheres shows have included songs from Mylo “A Rush of Blood to the Head” and “X&Y.”

But as long as it’s been since Coldplay played Wisconsin, it’s been a lot longer since Camp Randall Stadium last hosted a concert.

The last show was with the Rolling Stones on their “Bridges to Babylon Tour” in 1997. U2 also played at Madison Stadium that same year. The few Camp Randall headliners from the late ’80s to ’90s also included Pink Floyd and Genesis, with openers ranging from Lenny Kravitz to Blues Traveler to Public Enemy.
