Co-owner and head baker of the legendary donut shop in East Peoria dies

A co-owner and head baker of Carl’s Bakery and Restaurant, a well-known bakery in East Peoria, has died.

David “Dave” Armstrong, 76, of East Peoria, died Sunday, August 18.

According to his obituary, in addition to being the full-time baker behind Carl’s Daily Donuts, Armstrong was a public works foreman for the city of East Peoria for 32 years. He was also a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.

In a Facebook post, a representative of the restaurant wrote: “He was a great husband, father and grandfather and we will miss him very much.”

The East Camp Street bakery, with its distinctive chicken statue, remains in operation and was open again this week from Thursday to Saturday.

Armstrong’s wake will be held on Sunday, August 25th from 2-4 p.m. at Eastside Bible Church in Morton. His funeral will be held on Monday, August 26th at 10 a.m., also in Eastside.
