Clarksville Gas & Water celebrates National 811 Day – Clarksville Online

Clarksville Gas and Water Works - CGWClarksville, Tennessee: – The Clarksville Gas and Water Department (CGW) joins the country in observing National 811 Day, or 8/11 on the calendar! This date serves as a natural reminder for homeowners and excavator operators to make at least one toll-free call to 811 before any excavation project to have underground utility lines marked.

Every few minutes, an underground utility line is damaged because someone started digging without calling 811 first. This can result in utility outages, expensive repairs, or catastrophic consequences.

When you call 811, a Tennessee 811 dispatcher will take your call and notify the appropriate utility companies of your intent to dig. Professional locators will then come to the dig site to mark the approximate location of underground lines with flags, spray paint, or both, so you don’t damage a line.

Touching a single line can result in injury, repair costs, inconvenient power outages and fines. Any excavation project, no matter how big or small, requires a free 811 call or online request at www.tn811.com. Even small projects around the home, such as installing a mailbox, building a deck, planting a tree or installing a patio, are just a few examples of excavation projects that require a free 811 call at least three business days before groundbreaking.

“Thank you for joining the national effort on August 11 and all year long to call 811 before digging to have underground utility lines marked,” said Mark Riggins, General Manager of Gas & Water. “Calling 811 is essential to prevent damage to our vital utilities, avoid costly repairs and, most importantly, protect our families and community.”

Clarksville Gas & Water invites the public to visit its customer service centers at 2215 Madison Street or 111 Cunningham Lane on Friday, August 9, to learn about safe digging practices. For more information, visit online at www.clarksvillegw.com, www.811beforeyoudig.com or www.tn811.com.
