After losing two of three games to the Cardinals in St. Louis, the Cincinnati Reds now travel north to face the Minnesota Twins in an interleague game with first pitch tonight scheduled for 8:10 p.m. ET.
Starting line-up
Starting pitchers
Julian Aguiar
Julian Aguiar has had his ups and downs in his five major league appearances. Last time he didn’t allow a run in 4.2 innings against the Mets, but in the two previous appearances he allowed eight runs in a total of just 6.2 innings against Houston and Oakland.
In his limited major league appearances, his splits have been big but odd. Right-handed hitters haven’t hit many bats for average or power, but they’ve walked more than they’ve struck out and made plenty of contact. Left-handed hitters have solid average and plenty of power, but they haven’t walked many.

Bailey Ober
The second half of the season was great for Ober. In his first six starts after the break, he posted a 2.03 ERA in 40.0 innings. But then he allowed nine runs in 2.0 innings against Atlanta on August 26. Since then, he has made two starts and allowed two hits and just one run in 13.0 innings.
The splits are respectable for Ober, but neither left-handed or right-handed hitters do much. Right-handed hitters, however, hit better. They have a low average, don’t walk much, but hit with a solid amount of power when they do get hits. Left-handed hitters hit with a very low average, also rarely walk, but hit with a solid amount of power when they do get hits against him.

Matt McLain Update
David Bell said Matt McLain has started swinging the bat again. Although it’s not official, Bell finally acknowledged that McLain is unlikely to play in 2024.
“Realistically, that’s probably not going to happen,” Bell said.

A final update on the Minor League playoffs
Last night, both the Dayton Dragons and the Daytona Tortugas lost, eliminating both from their league’s playoffs. Chattanooga and Louisville are already out of the playoffs, and the Cincinnati Reds’ streak of not winning an outright minor league championship since 2002 continues. As Happy Gilmore’s hockey coach once told him: Better luck next year.
