CINCINNATI – Before the Washington Commanders’ 38-33 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3, a member of the home team made some rather disrespectful comments about their upcoming opponent.
“They don’t ask a lot of him,” Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt said of Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. “They make it really easy for him. Good college offense. (Kliff) Kingsbury is the OC.”
After the game, Taylor-Britt said he didn’t regret the comments and didn’t mean them seriously. We’d say comparing a Washington offense to that of a college program is a pretty obvious jab.
After the game, and after allowing explosive passes of 27, 30 and 55 yards to the college offense, Taylor-Britt was a little less vocal as he tried to find some positives in his team’s third straight loss to start the season.
“Downhill with (Brian) Robinson Jr. on the outside and a couple of long balls,” the cornerback said when asked what happened with his defense on Monday night while trying to minimize the impact of a few explosive plays on the outcome of the game. “I had one and one of my teammates had one, but those were the only really explosive plays.”
“It was those quick throws,” he said when asked why Daniels was so effective. Interestingly, the Bengals defense seemed to have no answer for those quick throws and couldn’t prevent “a couple of deep balls” that led to five touchdowns and a field goal in six of the Commanders’ eight possessions. The other two ended in kneeldowns – one at the end of the half and the other at the end of the game.
Taylor-Britt may not regret the comments or think he played a very bad game, but his head coach certainly doesn’t like the way his cornerback disrespected the Commanders this week.
“That’s not what we do. We praise our own team. We praise the other team. We don’t have to make throws like that,” Cincinnati coach Zac Taylor said after the loss. “This team hasn’t punted in two weeks. They’ve scored on every single possession for the last two weeks. I have tremendous respect for what they do over there. I’ve known (Washington offensive coordinator) Kliff (Kingsbury) for a long time. I knew with that quarterback it was going to be a very dangerous offense to play against and they proved that.”
Many college offenses were in action this weekend, and one of them scored 38 points against the Bengals’ NFL defense. Maybe Taylor-Britt will keep that in mind the next time he considers throwing jabs at another opponent.
