Check out the universities in the Pittsburgh area on U.S. News’ list of best colleges in Pennsylvania.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – U.S. News & World Report has released its annual rankings of the nation’s best colleges and universities.

The media company uses 17 measures of academic quality for state universities and 13 measures for state liberal arts colleges, regional universities and regional colleges.

Several Pittsburgh-area universities earned top honors after being included in national and statewide lists.

Best national universities

Carnegie Mellon University
No. 21 in National Universities (simultaneous)

Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Mellon University is known for its science and technology programs and ranks 21st on the list of national universities along with the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) and Washington University in St. Louis.

U.S. News & World Report also considers CMU to be one of the best value schools in the country, ranking it 24th on its list of best value schools and 6th in its ranking of business programs.

Enrollment of Bachelor students: 7,707
Acceptance rate: 11%

University of Pittsburgh
No. 70 in National Universities (simultaneous)

Located in the Oakland neighborhood, just three miles from downtown Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh is known for its schools of medicine, education, and the Swanson School of Engineering.

The university was ranked 70th on U.S. News’ list of national universities, tied with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the University of Connecticut.

Pitt also received top marks as the 32nd best public school in the country (tied with the University of Connecticut).

Enrollment in undergraduate studies: 20,220
Acceptance rate: 50%

Not only did the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University make the national list, but both universities, along with several others with local ties, were ranked among the state’s best.

Chatham University
No. 11

Enrollment of Bachelor students: 1,507
Acceptance rate: 73%

No. 12

Enrollment in undergraduate studies: 3,769
Acceptance rate: 91%

Indiana University of Pennsylvania
No. 23

In-state tuition and fees: $11,380
Enrollment of Bachelor students: 7,432
Acceptance rate: 91%

Point Park University
No. 24

Tuition and fees: $39,570
Enrollment in undergraduate studies: 2,323
Acceptance rate: 79%
