Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools approves restructuring of magnet schools and closure of Dorothy J. Vaughan Elementary

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools unanimously approved several school changes and reassignments at their meeting Tuesday night.

The changes, which will take effect for the 2025-2026 school year, affect several magnet schools.

As part of an expansion of the Creative and Visual Arts Department, the board voted to transfer elementary students from the First Ward Creative Arts Academy to the University Park Creative Arts School.

First Ward becomes a middle school.

The school board also voted to close the Dorothy J. Vaughan Academy of Technology and move its students to Parkside Elementary School.

Davidson K-8 will become a K-5 school, and middle school students will move to Bailey Middle School.

CMS Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill made a change to one of the proposals and recommended that students from Marie G. Davis IB World School not be moved to Dilworth Elementary.

Instead, the JT Williams Montessori program will move to Marie G. Davis when the replacement school on Park Road opens, Hill said.

Also on Tuesday night’s agenda was a vote on whether to allow 9th and 10th grade students to earn college credits at CMS middle colleges.

The school board rejected the proposal with a yes vote from four members.
